A.I.R extension#16 The Residence-location photos & props
A photoshoot in collaboration with the photographer Kristien Daem was set up during the filming of The Residence (a wager for the afterlife) (2012). Conceived during an extended artist residency in China (2009-10), the project initiated a collaboration with a Chinese artist/architect, Ma Wen. Sharing insights with him on the concept of creative clusters, Vermeir & Heiremans documented his practice as cultural producer in China, and later on continued filming with him in Belgium, during which also a part of the photo shoot took place. Another part was photographed during the filming of the scenes with two fictional characters at the location of a private villa in Belgium. Together with the photographer Kristien Daem, Vermeir & Heiremans created new fictional combinations and scenes for the photographs that existed outside of the film script, in this way creating new narratives. The pictures themselves were used as 'props' within the film The Residence (a wager for the afterlife): on the walls of Ma Wen's architects office and at the end of the film the photos are burned by him on the beach. The pictures were also to become part of 'In-residence Magazine' (2012), an artist publication that was first presented at Manifesta 9.
